In other words, the phone is a Trojan horse. You get a cool phone for not much money—$179 with a contract from T-Mobile—but then you're caught in Google's Web. Another way to see this is that a quasi-monopolist (Google rules the online advertising business) is attempting to protect and extend its quasi-monopoly by giving away at no cost something for which others charge money. Sound familiar? It's what Microsoft did to Netscape in the 1990s, giving away a free browser to undermine Netscape Navigator.

1. Quality Score will now be more accurate because it will be calculated at the time of each search query
2. Keywords will no longer be marked 'inactive for search'
3. 'First page bid' will replace 'minimum bid' in your account

- A more accurate Quality Score

Most importantly, we are replacing our static per-keyword Quality Scores with a system that will evaluate an ad's quality each time it matches a search query. This way, AdWords will use the most accurate, specific, and up-to-date performance information when determining whether an ad should be displayed. Your ads will be more likely to show when they're relevant and less likely to show when they're not. This means that Google users are apt to see better ads while you, as an advertiser, should receive leads which are more highly qualified.

- Keywords no longer marked 'inactive for search'

The new per-query evaluation of Quality Score affects you in that keywords will no longer appear as 'inactive for search' in your account. Instead, all keywords will have the chance to show ads on Google web search and the search network (unless you've paused or deleted them). Keep in mind, however, that keywords previously marked 'inactive for search' are not likely to accrue a great deal of traffic following this change. This is because their combined per-query Quality Score and bid probably isn't high enough to gain competitive placement.

- 'First page bid' will replace 'minimum bid'

As a result of migrating to per-query Quality Score, we are no longer showing minimum bids in your account. Instead, we're replacing minimum bids with a new, more meaningful metric: first page bids. First page bids are an estimate of the bid it would take for your ad to reach the first page of search results on Google web search. They're based on the exact match version of the keyword, the ad's Quality Score, and current advertiser competition on that keyword. Based on your feedback, we learned that knowing your minimum bid wasn't always helpful in getting the ad placement you wanted, so we hope that first page bids will give you better guidance on how to achieve your advertising goals.

Gartner's Predictions on IT Spending
Despite current economic concerns, worldwide IT spending will exceed $3.4 trillion in 2008, an increase of 8 percent from 2007 spending.

The interesting aspects are the following;

“Organisations are switching from company-owned hardware and software assets to per-use service-based models. This will impact the industry in various ways,” Mr. Tully said. “The projected shift to cloud computing, for example, will result in dramatic growth in IT products in some areas and in significant reductions in other areas. In general, assets will be utilized with greater efficiency, and we are assuming that the overall effect on market growth will be neutral. We also recognize that there is considerable upside potential for higher growth.”

The Palo Alto Daily reports. California Avenue is Palo Alto’s second, slightly less pretentious downtown; the Facebook office is located down the street from it, right along my favorite urban bike path.

The Internet firm Facebook, headquartered in downtown Palo Alto with more than 600 employees at five offices, will move all or a substantial portion of its operations to a site at Stanford Research Park, the company confirmed Monday.

Google's Announcing a beta release of the Android SDK

Google released the first beta version of its SDK for Android phones. Since this is a beta release, applications developed with it may not quite be compatible with devices running the final Android 1.0.

Highlights would be the following;

1. First and most obviously, the new Home screen is included, along with a ton of UI changes for 1.0.
2. Some new applications are included: an Alarm Clock, Calculator, Camera, Music player, Picture viewer, and Messaging (for SMS/MMS conversations.)
3. Several new development tools were added, such as a graphical preview for XML layouts for users of Eclipse, and a tool for constructing 9-patch images.
4. Since we've got a new Home screen application now, we thought the now-obsolete version from the M5 early-look SDK might be helpful to developers, so its source is included as a sample.
5. A number of new APIs are fleshed out and improved, and others are now close to their final forms for 1.0.
6. Tons of bugs were fixed, of course. (If you had problems with the MediaPlayer, try it now!)
